What is a meta tag ?

A meta tag is a tag (that is, a coding statement) in the Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) that describes some aspect of the contents of a Web page. The information that you provide in a meta tag is used by search engines to index a page so that someone searching for the kind of information the page contains will be able to find it. The meta tag is placed near the top of the HTML in a Web page as part of the heading.

This meta tag is a so called 'application handler'. It facilitates the use of the extension of a file. Examples are the wellknown .doc extension for a Word document or .xls extension for a spreadsheet.

This meta tag has no influence on your ranking with the search engines. But by displaying your pages correctly in different browsers is important to your customers so it will influence how customers will respond and validate your website.

Meta Keywords are a specific type of meta tag that appear in the HTML code of a Web page and help tell search engines what the topic of the page is.
